I am going to try to write this post without many edits. Mostly because I am in a state of shock right now. The House just passed that big, ugly bill cutting Medicaid. WTF? I guess my value, and that of the millions of other Americans with disabilities, has been made clear–according to Washington lawmakers

I guess disabled people don’t matter. It doesn’t seem like that long ago when I was incredibly grateful for living after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Don’t get me wrong I am still very grateful for that. But I just can’t believe that after 30 years with the ADA, we seem to be moving backwards.

I know I said in a previous post to not let fear overshadow hope, but it’s really hard not to at this point in time. So please allow me grace in absorbing and processing this.

How did we get here? There are so many isms to consider. Capitalism, ableism, sexism, racism, etc. In reality, it’s all just one big ball of hate.

Maybe it’s a big bowl of heat mixed in with a lot of fear. People are afraid of disabled people. I think we remind them of their own mortality, and the idea that one day they will be disabled too. Maybe there should be three guarantees to life: disability, death, and taxes. Maybe then people will see that the laws and protections for disabled people will apply to everyone at some point in time.

Sorry if this went on a major tangent. But I felt like I needed to post something. If you are going to be affected by these cuts, please know you are not alone. Please follow the American Association of People with Disabilities for more information. Happy disability pride!

Until the next….
